Watching Harlequin Ducks with Christian

We were delighted to meet Christian, a young naturalist and guide from Chile. He leads trips to Patagonia! He is learning to speak English and was delighted to learn the names of the geese and ducks at Carburn Park. He enjoyed watching the Harlequin Ducks as much as we did!

A Delight of Chickadees

We were happy to be able to share some sunflower seeds with Christian. He loved having the chickadees come to feed off his hand!

Ptarmigan Ptravails

We finally found two ptarmigan, tucked into some low bushes trying to get out of the howling wind!

Looking for Ptarmigan

We try to make an annual trek to the Highwood Pass before the highway closes at the end of November, in hopes of seeing White-tailed Ptarmigan. We chose the windiest day possible to make our trek. All previous trails were snowed over, so we huffed and puffed in the deep snow, looking for those little beady black ptarmigan eyes.

Waiting for Action

We encountered three groupings of sheep on our trip out to K Country. We watched one fairly significant head butt between two rams, but they they all settled down to eat in the ditch.

This old episode is from The Nature Nut. It examines how to set up effective bird feeders in the Albertan winter. John visits Tom Webb in Turner Valley, an expert bird feeder builder. Myrna Pearman also makes an appearance, giving plenty of good advice regarding what food to use. Many common Albertan winter birds are shown.
